The endless variety of ring types and the incredible array of technical approaches to them will create a rich learning experience. Stackable rings are perfect for beginners, spinners and hollow rings are great for more advanced students.

Creating a Lentil Shaped Hollow Form Pendant

This workshop is for those who want to continue discovering and creating with this versatile material as well as those who have never worked with metal clays. Silver Metal Clay is a non-toxic clay like substance made up of fine silver particles mixed with binders that burn off when sintered in a kiln. In this workshop you will become familiar with forming, texturing, rolling, stamping and explore fusing applications. This particular project has special and unique decorative accents. We will also explore metal clay finishing techniques.

WAX WORKING FOR CASTING
Instructor: William Greenwood

Lost wax casting dates back to the bronze age and is still used today, although there have been many advances since then. This class will focus on the wax aspect of the process. Learn how to carve, file, melt and manipulate to create designs for rings, pendants, pins and earrings. The wax can be cast by the instructor into the metal of your choice including sterling, yellow gold or brass at his own facility for an additional fee to cover the cost of the metal. Once the castings are complete they can be cleaned up using files, sandpaper and polishing techniques either on your own or in another class. Casting is an excellent way to explore jewelry making without investing a lot of time or expensive metals in the process.

Demonstrations will be plentiful with hands-on bench-time to cement the knowledge. The wide range of topics covered will give you a solid foundation to set you out on your educational path with confidence.

The design and construction of a container requires careful thought in planning and often meticulous measurements. The piece can be just about any shape and for any use. Different and fresh ideas on the norm are encouraged. Fitting the lid can be done in a variety of ways - pressure fitting, bayonnet and hinges will be discussed. Basic skills and intermediate soldering skills become sharpened by this type of project, containers offer a lot of design and technical options as well.

STONE SETTING

Stone setting is the perfect way to expand your basic skills, incorporating color and sparkle while honing your soldering skills. We will explore bezel setting a cabochon stone of any shape to begin the journey in a simple pendant. Projects will vary depending on individual designs and level of expertice allowing a broad range of techniques to be demonstrated. The use of round faceted stones will introduce tube, prong and flush settings for more advanced students. Terminology, tools and a plethora of techniques will be discussed in detail with plenty of time to work on several pieces.

INDEPENDENT STUDY
6 Thursdays 6:00 - 9:00PM • Nov 10 - Dec 22
This class is geared for students who have specific projects they need guidance with. It’s an added benefit for classmates to learn through observing other projects in the room. Bring your unfinished problem pieces, or set out to learn a specific technique or application. This class works differently than most, as students arrive they write their name on the board. The instructor goes down the list (first come first serve) and spends 10-15 minutes with each student one on one. Demonstrations are plentiful but individualized depending on need. Other students can watch and learn or feel free to opt out so they can focus on their own work.
Skill Level: Basic 2 & above (including soldering proficiency)

Materials: Students may bring their own or purchase from the school.
BENCH TIME
Non-instructed use of the studio, tools and equipment is a convenience for jewelers wanting to work independently. Materials are not included, Supplies (sawblades, solder, polishing compound, acetylene, drill bits, etc.) are included in the membership fee.
Available to current and former students of HVS.
