CLASSES & WORKSHOPS - AUGUST

Introduction to PMC (2 Mondays)
August 1 & 8 • 10 AM - 4 PM

(Bring lunch and snacks)

Learn how to make fine-silver jewelry from Precious Metal Clay, a soft clay-like material. Precious Metal Clay (PMC) is a material made from powdered metal. It is pure silver mixed with water and an ingredient made from the cell walls of green plants and is non-allergic and non-toxic. PMC is similar to traditional modeling clay which is transformed into a solid object by the use of a firing process.

Explore texturing, stamping, molds, bails, paper cut-outs and how to use a syringe filled with PMC. The focus will be on various methods used to create earrings and a pendant with CZs. Use your imagination and turn your ideas into wearable works of art such as your own amulets and charms.

Wax Working for Casting  (3-Day Weekend Workshop)
August 5, 6 & 7 • 10 AM – 4 PM

Lost wax casting dates back to the Bronze Age and is still used today although there have been many advances since then. This workshop will focus on the wax aspect of the process. On Friday and Saturday the instruction will include the techniques of wax forming. Learn how to carve, file, melt and manipulate to create designs for rings, pendants, pins and earrings. Sunday’s workshop will feature a demonstration of the centrifugal casting process. The wax can be turned into the metal of your choice including sterling, yellow gold or brass and will be cast by the instructor at a later date and made available for pick up at the school. The fee for silver is $25 per ounce; however, most pieces will weigh much less than an ounce. Once castings are back, they can be cleaned up using files, sandpaper and polishing. Casting is an excellent way to explore jewelry making without investing a lot of time or expensive metals in the process.
