Making a Ring from Scratch

Sat            6/13             10:00 - 5:00

(Lissa Queeney & Raychel Wengenroth)

Do you have scrap silver lying around that you'd like to use? This workshop covers melting down your scrap to form the sheet or wire needed to create a ring. Melting, fabricating, and soldering are the three core techniques you will use to create a piece ready for embellishment.

Skill Level: No Experience Necessary

Tuition: 175.

Lab Fee: 25.

Materials: Students should bring their old jewelry, silverware, etc. to be melted. No materials are provided for this workshop.

Filework Rings

Sat               6/20         10:00 - 4:00

(Lissa Queeney)

Now that you have made your new ring, learn a technique used by some knife makers. Traditionally used on the spine of a folding knife blade, this technique adds interest and originality to a simple piece. Filework involves cutting into metal to create repetitive patterns. This technique can be symmetrical or freeform, depending on your whim. Using small files, sawing, and refining the design will open up a whole new world of creative possibilities.

Skill Level: No Experience Necessary

Tuition: 125.

Lab Fee: 25.

Materials: Bring your ring from the 6/13 workshop

Basic 3 - Get Dimensional

Shift your focus to a more sculptural approach and discover more in depth knowledge of how to move metal. Sheet and wire can be manipulated in amazing ways! Bend, stretch, form, construct, fabricate, score, deck and forge pieces of jewelry and functional objects. Learn the basics of forging by hammering heavy wire to stretch it, learn to form and dap sheet to create bracelet and bowl shapes and to score and bend sharp corners to produce box forms. Students are encouraged to sample a variety of techniques and combine them into  more significant pieces of their creation.
Projects ideas may include (but are not limited to): A constructed cylinder box, hollow ring, forged bracelet or small scale sculptures.

This class can be repeated over & over. More advanced projects may include candlesticks, boxes, business card holder, vase, incense burner. Here's the opportunity to expand on your skills and create pieces of volume beyond jewelry.

Skill Level: Basic 2

Tuition: 250.

Lab Fee: 15.

Materials: 30. for non-precious metals. (Students bring their own silver or gold)
