First Impressions: Metal Clay 101

(Christine Eschbach)
This series of classes offers an introduction into the world of fine silver precious metal clay. Students will learn to manipulate metal clay in its pliable form, refine details in its dry form, torch fire their work and ultimately be left with a piece of pure silver jewelry. Time and intricacy dependent, students can expect to create a couple of charms and/or multiple pairs of earrings.
Tools, tips, standard practices and the infinite possibilities that metal clay brings to your jewelry making skillset will be demonstrated during this weekly metal clay series.

Basic 2 - Bezel Settings 6:00 - 9:00
(Raychel Wengenroth)
Thirsting for more knowledge? This is the perfect class to expand upon the techniques you learned in Basic 101. Cabochon stones can be added using a variety of bezel setting methods. The project of a plain bezel cup incorporated into a pendant, pin or ring introduces soldering techniques in a logical step by step process. It also allows for individual design elements with the bail or ring shank. This is where the fun really begins!
Skill Level: Basic 101
Tuition: $250

Materials: Students bring their own or purchase from HVS
Independent Study 6:00 - 9:00

This class is a flexible continuation of your skills enabling you to have one on one consultation with the instructor. New techniques will be explored as individual needs are addressed. Classmates can observe demonstrations as they see fit.

Basic 3 - Forging&Forming 6:00 - 9:00
(Raychel Wengenroth)
Let's shift towards a sculptural approach and explore more in depth knowledge of how to construct and solder with increased proficiency.
Forging heavy gauge wire will provide a whole new dimension to works of all sizes whether it's jewelry or candlesticks. It's noisy and physical with amazing results.
Hollow rings are a great way to exercise your technical and fitting skills. Learn how to make the inner ring fit perfectly, then design anything you like for the outside shape with consideration to comfort and practicality...or not! These techniques are easily translated to containers and 3 dimensional components of all kinds.
